Smoke Detector Notice

02-12-2026

Most of our neighborhood smoke, fire and CO detectors are hard-wired in our homes, as required by law. Some of the older homes were built with 7-year life units with back-up batteries. Some of the newer homes may have 10-year life units. It’s important to periodically test these units to make sure they are working and, if necessary, replace them. The newer replacement units have a 10-year life span with a sealed 10-year battery back-up. At 10 years, they need to be replaced. Should an insurance claim arise, you must have working smoke, fire, and CO detectors. Also, to sell your home, you’ll have to sign an affidavit that these systems are functioning properly.
